Master's Course - Our Learn to Sail Course

This course is for the beginner with little or no experience. Graduates of this intensive 33-hour program gain a basic functional knowledge of sailing and master the comprehensive sailing skills needed to confidently rent one of our boats after graduation.
The Master's Course consists of 30 hours on-the-water and gives you the thoroughness, confidence and ability that many old salts never achieve. You'll spend 3 days with an ASA certified instructor on scheduled dates and 3 additional practice sails with fellow students.
NYSS's "Master's Course" textbook is sent prior to the start of the course.
In addition to the ASA Basic Keelboat Standards (101) certificate you will receive the Small Boat Safety certificate approved by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and the U. S. Coast Guard that meets all requirements for mandatory education and licensing for every state in the United States.

Coastal Navigation Course

Self-study course and 1 hour with ASA Instructor before taking the exam. You will become proficient in measuring direction and distance, reading nautical charts, dead reckoning navigation, bearings and fixes, tides and currents, correcting course for current and leeway, fog navigation, rules of the road. During The Next Course, Bareboat Chartering Course and Advanced Coastal Cruising you will practice navigation in the "Real World" and work with Loran, GPS.
You will receive ASA Coastal Navigation Standard (105) certificate.

The Next Course

This is the course for Master's Course Grads or other groups of sailors who have similar sailing knowledge or experience. You'll spend 2 days with an ASA certified instructor on scheduled dates and additional 2 practice sails with fellow students This overnight stay program concentrates on advanced sailing techniques, docking and navigation. You'll experience sailing in yachts ranging from 25' to 30' with an engine.
You will receive ASA - Basic Coastal Cruising Standards (103) certificate.

Bareboat Chartering Course

This course is the "learner’s permit" you need to complete to safely charter or own a large cruising vessel. You'll spend 2 1/2 days aboard a fully equipped 30’ to 40' yacht, with ample time for exploring and relaxation. Day one starts with a short session on how to prepare for a weekend cruise. Later in the afternoon, you will practice docking and navigating in a crowded harbor situation. You will spend the night on board and leave early on day 2 for one of eastern Long Island's historic seaports. Along the way your NYSS expert instructor will guide you through sail changes that need to be made, channels to be navigated, logs to be kept and preparation for the unexpected. This course shows you the "how-to-do" on a large cruising vessel. The ASA’s "Cruising Fundamentals" is mailed in advance for you to study.
You will receive ASA - Bareboat Chartering Standard (104) certificate.

Advance Coastal Cruising

Sailors must safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length.
This is a day and nighttime course in coastal and inland waters; in any weather.
You will spend 4 days and 3 nights on the water.
Electronic instruments are used in coastal navigation.
You will receive ASA - Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard (106) certificate.

Spinnaker Workshop

The Spinnaker is the most mysterious of all sails. Few sailors truly know its workings and how to harness its power. NYSS's Spinnaker Workshop will teach you the mystery and the workings of this sail. This one-day program is designed to have you set, trim and douse spinnakers until you can do it in your sleep. Anyone from the new sailing Grads to veteran racers can benefit.

Celestial Navigation

A self-study course in celestial navigation theory required to safely navigate a sailboat on an offshore passage. The practical application is conducted in the Offshore Passagemaking Course.
You will receive ASA - Celestial Navigation Standard (107) certificate.

Offshore Passagemaking

Gain skills as skipper and crew on a sailing vessel on offshore passages in any weather.

Racing Tactics and Racing Regatta

For many of our "Master's Course" graduates, our Racing programs are a great way to improve your sailing skills.

An ASA instructor teaches you the theory behind starting tactics, tied racing starts, proper sail trim and shape, mark-rounding strategies, stalling and accelerating tactics, upwind and downwind strategies. 3 hours classroom instructions and 5 hours on water.

Racing Regatta

The program is taught in our Sonar class sloop. You will be coached on the racing skills and techniques as you put them all together in the fluid situation of actual racing.
