    Brush Up Your Sailing Skills

    This "Refresher Course" is designed for sailors who took a basic course outside NYSS (with or without either ASA or US Sailing Certification) and did not have a chance or time to master their sailing skills. This is a 2 days course on the water only.
    Optional ASA Basic Keelboat Standard (101) certification available.

    General Description: Sailors must be able to sail a boat of about 20 feet in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision.

    Skills Covered: Demonstrate a good knowledge of sailing terms, nautical chart terms and terminology describing the parts of a sail boat and their function. Show proficiency at maneuvering a boat through all points of sail with appropriate sail trim including single handing a Man Overboard (MOB) rescue. Act as helmsman and crew on a sailboat using proper commands and responses while sailing a windward / leeward course and performing a successful tack and gybe. Applicants must be able to bend on the sails, raise the sails, tie in a first and second reef, heave to underway, set and retrive the anchor, maneuver and secure the boat to a mooring under sail, lower and stow the sails properly. Exhibit a working knowledge of basic weather systems and how it affect local sailing conditions.?@Knowledge of The Rules of the Road and right of way on the water. List USCG safety requirements and equipment required for a 20 foot sailboat. Be able to identify lateral aids to navigation, navigation lights and the types of distress signals. Describe the function of and tie the following knots without assistance: bowline, clove hitch, figure eight knot, square knot, and half hitch.

    What can you do after finishing the course?
    Participate in Alumni sails on Tuesday through Friday all day $35.
    For additional $35 you may bring up to 5 guest with you.
    Come for some more practice sails for $25 a session
    Become a Passport sailing Club Member - unlimited sailing for $75 a month. First month free if you enroll after the course.

    Wednesday and Thursday 12:30 - 5:30 or
    Saturday and Sunday 12:30 - 5:30.
