Very popular among sailors looking to charter a yacht and new yacht owners.

This is the course for Master's Course Grads or other groups of sailors who have similar sailing knowledge or experience. You'll spend 2 days with an ASA certified instructor on scheduled dates. This course focuses on advanced sailing techniques, system maintenance of a cruising boat, docking and navigation. You'll gain experience sailing in yachts ranging from 27' to 30' with an inboard diesel engine. Graduates will be able to cruise safely in local and regional waters as skipper and crew on an auxiliary sailboat in moderate winds and sea conditions.

Course Description: The course concentrates on maneuvering a sailboat with confidence in close quarters, all aspects of docking, securing the boat to a dock, mooring techniques and handling the boat in reverse. Learn about the safety gear required by the USCG for a 27-30 foot cruising sailboat and how to utilize it. Familiarize yourself with the multiple systems found aboard cruising boats including maintaining and troubleshooting a diesel engine.

Students will plot a course to a safe anchorage using nautical charts and aids to navigation, sail the boat following the plotted course directions, check the position underway using dead reckoning, anchor the vessel, plot a return course and sail back to the start point. Each student will act as skipper and crew during the voyage gaining hands on knowledge of the responsibilities and duties required. Real situations will be encountered underway reinforcing a good understanding of the Rules of the Road on the water. Good seamanship will be stressed at all times encompassing how to handle various wind and sea conditions, the dangers of a lee shore, selecting a good anchorage, what immediate actions to take in an emergency, Man Over Board (MOB) retrieval and interpreting weather forecasts as they apply to you.

A test will be given aboard underway or upon returning to the New York Sailing School.
